Voices of the Future Vol. 7
An Anthology of Short Stories
Escaping Limbo
by Colin Horst
When an undocumented black hole interrupts the flight path of starship USS Exodus, Lynx Coldstone must bring the accelerator drives back online before the void of nightmares terminates their mission forever.
About Colin Horst
As an artist who discovered a love for storytelling through books and theater, Colin Horst spends as much time writing stories as he does performing them onstage. Both blessed and cursed with an overactive mind, Colin slays his dragons of doubt daily while writing science fiction stories filled with imperfect characters marching forward with steadfast courage.
When not brainstorming new tech for his stories, Colin can be found reciting Hamilton by memory, arranging his friends according to MBTI typology, or assembling computer components for a new PC build.
Discouraged by characters who lack realistic fears and doubts?
Many books today showcase characters conquering surface-level challenges with little, if any, doubt in their own ability. It sets an unbeatable standard that’s impossible for real humans to replicate. As someone who struggled with both, I felt inadequate in comparison.
Truth is, fear and doubt are a normal part of the human experience, and minimizing them in our media only discourages those who face them on a daily basis.
That’s why I write Stories of Steadfast Courage in the Face of Fear
To equip you to conquer your doubts, not cower in fright
SO IF YOU WANT
- Stories like The Hunger Games and How to Train Your Dragon filled with heartwarming characters facing their doubts and fears with steadfast courage.
- Stories with compelling science fiction settings and enthralling tech advancements inspired by real-world research.
- Stories that don’t shy from the hard struggles, but show there is always hope amidst the darkness and despair.
- Stories that emphasize the value of honesty, faithfulness, and discernment and their role in meaningful relationships.
AND YOU’RE TIRED OF
- The frustration of searching for Sci Fi books with meaningful themes and role-model characters, but only finding cold, hard plots and harsh testaments to the corruption of human nature.
- Feeling lost when a story leaves you emotionally emptier than when you started.
- Becoming discouraged when you can’t live up to the fearless characters in books and movies that conquer every challenge with no doubt in their own abilities.
THEN FOLLOW ALONG TO
- Be encouraged when you see a character overcome the same doubts and feelings of inadequacy.
- Fall in love with relatable, imperfect characters that show it doesn’t require unobtainable strength or intelligence to conquer your fears.
- Read stories that give you the courage to rise each morning with courage to face the day.
